Alishan Travel Guide: Wonders and Tips

Experience the Magic of Alishan: A Guide to Taiwan’s Sea of Clouds

Alishan isn't just a mountain; it’s a spiritual experience. Located in the heart of Chiayi County, the Alishan National Forest Recreation Area is famous for its sunrise, iconic forest railway, and high-mountain tea.

Whether you are a nature lover, a photography enthusiast, or a hiker, this guide covers everything you need to know to plan the perfect trip.

Top 5 "Must-See" Wonders of Alishan

To see Alishan is to witness five specific phenomena that have made it world-famous:

  1. The Alishan Forest Railway: One of only three mountain railways in the world, this narrow-gauge train winds through lush cypress forests.

  2. The Sunrise (Morni): Watching the sun break over the "Sea of Clouds" at Zhushan is a bucket-list event.

  3. The Sea of Clouds: Often seen in autumn and winter, the mist settles into the valleys, creating an island-like effect for the peaks.

  4. The Sacred Trees: Walk among giant red cypresses, some of which are over 2,000 years old.

  5. Sunset Glow: As the day ends, the sky turns a brilliant palette of deep oranges and purples above the treeline.

Best Time to Visit

While Alishan is beautiful year-round, your experience will change with the seasons:

Book hotels 3 months in advance; it’s the busiest time.

Summer (Jun–Aug)

Autumn (Sep–Nov)

The most stable weather for photography.

Winter (Dec–Feb)

Bring heavy layers; temperatures can drop to 5°C.

How to Get There: Logistics Made Easy

Most travelers start their journey from Chiayi City.

  • By Bus: Take the 7322 "Alishan Route" from Chiayi TRA Station or the High Speed Rail (HSR) Station.3 It takes about 2.5 hours.

  • By Forest Railway: A scenic but slow journey. Tickets are limited and must be booked online via the official TRA website well in advance.

  • By Car: A winding drive up Route 18. Be cautious of fog in the late afternoon.

What to Eat: Flavors of the Mountain

You cannot leave Alishan without trying the local specialties:

  • Alishan High Mountain Tea: Famous for its floral aroma and sweet aftertaste. Look for Oolong or Jinxuan varieties.

  • Aiyu Jelly: Made from the seeds of a local creeping fig, served cold with lemon and honey.

  • Wasabi Products: Fresh wasabi is grown locally; try it with tofu or buy the crackers to take home.

  • Wild Boar Sausage: A staple of the local Tsou indigenous cuisine.

Essential Travel Tips for Your Trip

  • Pack Layers: Even in summer, the mountain air is chilly, especially before sunrise.

  • Check the Sunrise Time: Ask your hotel front desk or check the Central Weather Bureau for the exact sunrise time and train departure.

  • Buy Tickets Early: If you plan on taking the Zhushan sunrise train, buy your ticket at the Alishan Station the afternoon before.

Ready to breathe in the mountain air? Alishan is more than a destination; it’s a retreat for the soul. Don't forget to bring a sturdy pair of walking shoes and a high-capacity memory card for your camera!

  • 09:30 AM – Depart Chiayi: Take the Alishan Express Bus or the Forest Railway from Chiayi Station.

  • 12:00 PM – Arrival & Lunch: Arrive at the Alishan National Forest Recreation Area. After paying the entrance fee, check into your hotel (most are in the Alishan Tourist Village). Grab a quick lunch of Wild Boar Sausage or Bamboo Shoot Soup.

  • 01:30 PM – The Giant Tree Trail (Jushun): Take the park shuttle or a short train ride to Shuimuping Station. Walk the elevated boardwalks through the Giant Cypress Forest.

    • Highlight: See the 2,000-year-old Xianglin Giant Tree.

  • 03:30 PM – Sisters Pond (Sister Lakes): Continue your hike to these two emerald-green high-mountain ponds. The reflection of the trees on the still water is perfect for photos.

  • 06:30 PM – Dinner: Enjoy a Hot Pot dinner at the village—it’s the best way to warm up as the mountain temperature drops.

    • Tip: Keep your eyes on the peaks of Jade Mountain (Yushan) to see the first light.

  • 08:00 AM – Breakfast & Forest Bathing: Take the train back down, or better yet, hike down via the Zhushan Forest Trail (approx. 45-60 mins) to breathe in the morning phytoncides.

  • 10:30 AM – Zhaoping Park & Cherry Blossom Trail: Even outside of blossom season, this area offers beautiful views of the railway tracks and the Sky Walk.

  • 12:30 PM – Fenqihu Stopover: On your way back down the mountain, stop at the mid-way village of Fenqihu.

    • Activity: Eat a famous Fenqihu Railway Bento (lunch box) and explore the "Old Street" for souvenirs like wasabi crackers and fresh aiyu jelly.

  • 03:00 PM – Tea Tasting: Visit a local tea plantation in the Shizhuo area to learn how Alishan Oolong is processed before heading back to Chiayi.
